The Mostafa A. El-Sayed Award
in Experimental Physical Chemistry

The Division of Physical Chemistry is excited to announce that our Senior Award in Experimental Physical Chemistry has a new name. Starting this year, it will be renamed in honor of Professor Mostafa El-Sayed.

Mostafa A. El-Sayed Award in Experimental Physical Chemistry
For nearly 60 years, Professor El-Sayed has helped define our field — from electronic energy relaxation to ultrafast spectroscopy to plasmonic nanoparticle chemistry — work distinguished enough to bear his name in the literature as the El-Sayed rule. He holds our field’s highest honors, including the ACS Priestley Medal, the National Medal of Science, and the Irving Langmuir Award; spent 24 years as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Physical Chemistry; and has trained more than 70 PhD students and 80 postdocs — mentorship that helped build Georgia Tech’s physical chemistry program into one of the best in the world.

Few people embody the spirit of experimental physical chemistry the way Professor El-Sayed does. It’s only fitting that this award now carries his name.
